World War II Love Stories – Jack & Eunice

World War II love stories are some of my favorite to listen to. Two of my favorite Valentines share their World War II love stories of how they started dating, got engaged, their wedding and Honeymoon. What I loved about filming them was that even after sixty years of marriage their love for each other still was very apparent.

Jack and Eunice had known each other since childhood. They were neighbors as children and their parents were best friends. As a child Jack thought of Eunice as a “scrawny little girl.” After high school Jack enlisted into the Coast Guard. He was stationed in Alaska throughout World War II. When he returned home after World War II he noticed that she wasn’t a scrawny little girl anymore.

Jack & Eunice dated throughout the summer until he left to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Eunice was attending USC so they would visit during weekends and holidays. Jack proposed to Eunice at Dinner in San Luis Obispo. They were married in Brawley, California and honeymooned in San Diego, Santa Barbara and Carmel.

The US Grant Hotel was the finest hotel in San Diego at the time and they enjoyed one night there. You can still stay there and it is still a San Diego City Landmark. It was also fun to hear that they passed on a room in Santa Barbara that was $40/night because it was too expensive. If only prices were still that cheap.

What a beautiful example of a marriage and a friendship.
