Robert Andrew Valko

September 13, 1938 – December 23, 2020

U.S. Commander (Retired USN) Robert Andrew Valko, a resident of Chula Vista, passed away peacefully at the Naval Medical Center San Diego NMCSD from complications related to COVID-19 at the age of 82.  He proudly and honorably served in the U.S. Navy as a senior chaplain with duty assignments with the U.S. NAVY and USMC which included travels around the world to such locations as: WESTPAC, Philippines, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, Diego Garcia, Arctic, and military bases located on the east and west coasts within the continental U.S.

After his love for God, his wife and then country – Robert enjoyed watching sports.  This included his hobbies of tracking team statistics and following players and coaches over the years.  He was an avid fan of the Steelers, Chargers, Padres, Pirates, San Diego State University.

Robert is survived by his Beloved and Devoted “Honey Love” – Susan Valko, along with his adopted children: Thomas Martin of Fontana, CA.; Mark Martin of Dade City, FL.;  Mari Walker of Prosper, TX.; and Pam Gibson of Friendswood, TX.  His brother Richard Valko of Hanover, PA.; sister Shirley Rose Valko of Hanover, PA.; nephews Bryan Valko of Littlestown, PA.; Christopher Valko of Glen Burnie, MD., along with many cousins and adopted grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other family members and countless friends around the world who witnessed Robert’s gentle nature, zest for life and love for God.

Robert will be missed by those who were honored to have known him.  Some people were even blessed to have called this man family in this life; yet all who came into contact with him were lucky to be able to have called him a friend.  Although Robert has now been called home to Heaven, we celebrate his legacy as he is loved and revered in memory as a noble and forthright man who had a good heart for God’s work and God’s people. Robert will be deeply missed and forever remembered.  A private and closed Military Memorial Ceremony to Honor his commendable Service will be held on January 29, 2021 – at The Miramar National Cemetery, San Diego, CA.
